Unable to get timber and safe glues for cages
Question
My name is Michelle & I own a Bearded Dragon lizard. I know exactly what I want his enclosure to look like, however, I cannot figure out where to purchase the materials. So far, the lumber stores I have been to only sell raw wood. They told me that I could kill my pet if I treated the wood or glued anything to it.
So, now what! If I can't get the wood for the main structure of my cage, then how can I build it? Do you know what chemicals are safe around lizards? Or do you know of a wood or other material that can be used to build a beardie cage? Please, let me know as soon as possible....thank you....Michelle
Answer
I’m not sure what they have been telling you. You can use plywood or MDF as sides, floor & back for the cage. I like to use melamine for the base as has a coating that is water proof.
What do you mean treat the wood? You can coat it with polyurethane and let it dry for a week or two without hurting your pet. Also adhesive coatings work well for the inside. Most timbers are OK but cedar and cypress are not often used. They are OK in small quantities, like the front strips or similar but should not be used for the substrate.
It seems weird that none stock plywood or MDF. They can often cut them to size for a small fee as well, making your job easier.
