Plexiglass too expensive for large cage
Question
i am building a 7'x4'x3' cage for my soon to be massive burmese. i am looking for some ideas for the siding, top and bottom of the cage. i was thinking of using plexiglass but it is real expensive. is there something that you could suggest to use that would be cheaper, but hold humidity and heat as good as the plexiglass.
my idea was to use plexiglass for the bottom, front, top and side. with holes in the top for ventilation. but if i were to do this, the cage would cost upwards of 700 dollars to complete.
any ideas would be helpfull.

Answer
I would tend to use MDF, plywood or chipboard with plexiglass or glass inserts for the side and front. You could make the cage so that it can be opened from the top and/or from the front. There are a couple of examples on this page

Plexiglass is very expensive and as long as you can get a good view, wood with glass or plexiglass inserts, it would work fine. You can line it with Contact or paint it and for the main structural pieces you can use laminated materials and either paint the edges or get them professionally finished. You still need to have ventilation but the material will hold the humidity quite well.
Hope this helps.
