I am ... very happy with your plans, the organization that you have put into it and I am extremely happy with the response I have gotten from you when I have encountered a problem.
It sure does save money. At the same time it allows me and others like me to experience making the cage for our animal (animals) that we care so much about. I think that when someone takes the time to sit down and make something like this for their animal it really shows how much they care for them and respect them.

With your plans you can also alter the cage to each and everyone's specifications, or needs. I think what you are doing is wonderful and I want to thank you again.

Sincerely
Robert Hansford

"This is going to make an 11 year old and his lizard Rex very happy".

Spent $108.00 at Lowes, another $65.00 at Home Depot buying things that Lowes didn't have..... Spending time with my son in a hardware store.... PRICELESS!"

"Overall, the best thing I have found from the cage designs... is that:
They work!!!!

They allow you to view and touch your Iguana from all sides, This is a must!

Once you have the material list you don't go back to the hardware store.

Just follow the instructions and it comes out perfect.

Your maintenance will be much easier.

Your iguana will thank you

Once again, you will have built something cool. "

Regards and best to all our Green Iguana friends, Lance and Joey Portwood Glidden, Texas ".

Large Lizard Cage on a Limited Budget

Question

I want to build a cage that is about 8' to 10' long by 4'to 5' wide that will cold a 1' to 2' of water and a second layer almost completely on the water but nearly 4' to 6' feet long for him to clime out of the water and bask on. i would like this to be a grate display of this wonderful animal, but i will only have around $200.00 to spend.i need it to as well have a lid that can handle immense heat. so here are my questions.
A} dose this plan make any sense or sound practicle.
B} can it be done for $200.00
C} what could i use to build this structure that will allow him to be seen, but hold the mighty weight of the water and then be able to have a shelf in it that will hold dirt.

please help me i am trying hard to make a perfect cage for my animal that will not disappoint him but will be practical and not brake my wallet. i would buy a book but then it would take away from the money i have for my dear pet.

Answer

That's a big cage and probably not one you could build for that amount if it includes the lighting, heating and other fixtures.

I think you may need to make a cage that is a structure, rather than one that can be easily moved. Marine ply with a two pack water proof coating inside would be ideal and then have a glass front that fits over the area cut out. Unfortunately with that sort of design you can only get the snake out from above and sometimes that can be tricky. The two pack is expensive, as is the marine ply.

Another alternative is to make is from glass using secondhand plate glass but getting second hand glass thick enough for a cage that size is difficult, if not impossible.

I would also give consideration to buying a seconhand cage of some sort and refurbishing it or making it suitable for your needs.

The other thing to consider is just save some more money or do it over time as you get some. I think that realistically you are not going to do it for that price if everything is new and is is as large as you want it.
