Hognose snakes kept together
Question
I have a question that I would like to ask you. I have two Hognose snakes, male and female. Can I keep them in one enclosure or do they have to be kept separately?
Thanks
Anita
Answer
Hi Anita,
I haven't an experience with these and the reading is ambiguous - some say yes and others no. I keep stimpsons pythons together as they are small and will happily co-habitate but most snake do not co-habuitate well together as a rule.
Most breeders only introduce the other sex after they turn the temps up and feed them. That said, given a large enough cage with enough separate hiding boxes so they can leave each other alone, it may be that they will happily co-habitate. Male and male would most likely be a no-no but opposites may do quite well. Also, neither one is likely to eat the other if they are the same size.
The worst they will do is have the odd fight - I have had to separate mine before - but that was my fault as I was feeding them in the cage and one struck the other - not sure if it was striking at the food or the other snake but they certainly had a good go. No major injury inflicted however, so it was all good.
If you do decide to keep them together my other piece of advice would be to feed them separately, outside of the cage. I take mine out, put them in each in a separate escape proof container and feed them in the containers. Once the have eaten, they can go back into the cage.
Hope this helps.
